"Considering my agenda at the peak of this... incident that seems to have befallen our lands, I am afraid I will have to turn you down. I wish you luck in attempting to get the notion past the Judge Magister in the event you do try again."

"aaand.. what is your specialization?"
"My elder brothers taught me how to fence from the time I was younger, and although I have not done much of it in a combat situation, I am also told I have a knack for magicks."

"That would be preferable. As Emperor of Archadia, there are expected garments of office that I am to wear - however, the Senate, or what remains of them, and I have come to a compromise. They insist on a ceremonial cape, of all things, and there is naught I can do but humor them."

"House Solidor has begotten a long line of Archadian emperors; I myself am the sixth Solidor, the thirteenth emperor of Archadia. My brother, Vayne is quite infamous for a number of things, chief among them the death of my father, Gramis. Those are the important details. If you would permit, I am still grieving."

"wow, your family would love me! have anyone else in your family?"
"That is beyond me to assume. Gramis had two sons before Vayne and I, but they too passed far before their time, at the hands of Vayne."

"oh. sounds horrible. haha. anything else important happen in your life?"
"I do not jest. In the interest of ending the war that my brother had foolishly started with little to no regard for the kingdoms caught in our midst, I enlisted the help of a deposed princess of Dalmasca in restoring her country and forcing him to rethink his actions. Unfortunately, matters progressed to such a degree that I was pushed to raising my sword against my elder brother - but I did not deal the killing blow. That matter was left to the rightful princess and her party. For lack of a more suited candidate, I was elected Emperor directly following his death."

What could be counted as the first sign that he was in over his head occurred just after leaving the Garif settlement in the Ozmone Plains. Supinelu had secured seven chocobos for the motley group's use at no cost; and though Basch and Ashe mounted up like old pros, Larsa was left to try to make heads or tails of the yellow bird currently pecking at his hair.

He grimaced at the thing and it backed up, a remorseful look in its eyes.

"Jaggle giving you a hard time, sir?"

If Larsa were easy to startle, he would have jumped as Gurdy appeared as if from nowhere at his elbow with a knowing cluck.

"Not to worry, it's just like this..." Guiding him carefully through the mounting process, left side only, foot in stirrup, up and over, the young princeling was soon seven feet in the air with a bitten tongue and white knuckles. In front of him, Vaan's chocobo took an irritable step forward as his weight shifted back, flashing Larsa a thumbs-up.

He looked away to hide his rising blush and dropped a hundred gil into Gurdy's paw silently.

Balthier had had a miserable time of mounting up, but that was mostly due to the mutual dislike between himself and the feathered species, and not inexperience. Thankfully, though, the sky pirate's mistrust of chocobos distracted everyone ( save Vaan ) from the princeling's first attempt.

In the group like this, he had to marvel at how a mismatched quilt of sky pirates, fallen royalty, street rats and traitors ( he'd yet to hear the full story behind that one ) worked together so easily and fluidly.

And then, as they took to Ozmone Plain two abreast with Basch at point, Larsa had to wonder if he would be stuck on the outside all the way to Bur-Omisace and the Gran Kiltias -

until Penelo looked over, or Vaan backwards, and flashed him a reassuring smile.

Then he didn't feel quite so alone.
