Chapter One
“Serah, where are we going?”
The radio was turned down as Claire spoke to her sister, who had been silent this whole time and focused on the dusty road. The whole ten minutes had been filled with pop songs as Serah drove farther away from town, her face straight as they made the last turnoff to an even more rocky road. Looking at her sister, she gave her a small smile. “I told you,” she said, her face turning to the road again, “I’m interviewing for a job, and you already told me you were willing to come for support.”
“That doesn’t answer my question, Serah,” Claire told her, annoyed that she’d agreed to this without knowing all the information first. Serah was an able-bodied college student; she didn’t need any support for an interview. Anyways, she wouldn’t be able to hold Serah’s hand throughout her sibling’s life. She was moving in with her girlfriend, Fang, after Serah earned her degree in teaching. Serah had declared only last week that she was getting a job, and this was her first interview since she’d worked at a fast food joint in high school. Then, she’d gotten the job to pay the bills, since Light had been stationed far away in a different town. Somehow, Serah survived, and Light (the name she preferred to be called, only Serah still called her Claire on a regular basis,) knew she would survive this interview. As they pulled up to the somewhat sparking-clean building, Light gave Serah a look.
“So this is why you didn’t tell me where we were going?” Light questioned, Serah not giving a respond to Light’s tone of anger. Why, of all places, did Serah choose the military base to work at? Light had no clue. She shook her head as the door shut, Serah already outside and dusting off her black pencil skirt and white blouse, very different from her normal school attire of a pleaded skirt and a white shirt. “Don’t worry, I’m applying for a job at the research facility. Did you forget this isn’t just a military base?” Serah let out, not bothering to look at her sister as she walked inside, her shoes click clacking on the hard tile. Light followed after with a straight face, wanting to smack her sister for even considering a job so close to a place that involved the military. She’d chosen that job so Serah didn’t have to.
As she entered the clean, sterilized building, the smell hit her nose instantly. It was the smell of chlorine and some other sort of chemical, which was to be expected of the place, but it made Light hate the place without a second thought. “Serah, are you going to be able to deal with the stench?” she asked, looking up for her sister. But, her sister wasn’t there. Light almost stepped on the fallen body, only recognizing the shining blue necklace that belonged to her sister before being hit in the back of the head, and she begun to fall to the ground it what seemed to be slow motion.
As the female hit the ground unconscious, Larxene let a feral smile that she’d been hiding come out. The ploy had obviously worked, and they’d gotten more subjects out of it. Her assistant wasn’t far behind her, and he could only give a look of disgust as she bent down. As she lifted a chunk of the older girl’s pink hair, she made a detached comment, barely audible over the air conditioner as it hummed. “These two will make wonderful test subjects. Wouldn’t you agree, Dr. Kadaj?” He didn’t hide his half-smirk as he tried to stay professional as her playful tone filled the air.“Let’s get them to the lab already, Larxene.” He said coldly as the men in white came with two stretchers, one for each of the females. His eyes studied them coldly, almost reptile like as he watched the two get carried away.
“You have too much fun with this,” he commented as the two doctors started to head into their section of the research facility. The chatter of doctors filled the air, and it mixed with the stench perfectly. Kadaj let one of his orbs fall on Larxene, still smiling maliciously, and it spread to him, which she caught out of the corner of her eye. “And you don’t?” she teased, “Just look at the smirk on your face!”
“Shouldn’t you two be getting back to work? You’re being too chatty. Are the subjects ready to be inspected?” interjected another male, his haircut almost the same as the other male doctors, who didn’t even blink at the black wing looming to his side. “Patient 43276 needs his medication. Don’t worry about the new test subjects; I’ll take care of them,” he said, ordering the doctors behind him to get the tables ready to use. They rushed off without another word, and he glared at the two as they gave him the obligatory “yes sir” and went off.
“Dr. Genesis is such a prick,” Larxene commented when they got out of earshot, sterilizing her hands alongside the male, who was sterilizing the large needle needed for Patient 43276 on the table. He made no comment as they stood outside the patient’s door, completely absorbed in his work. Larxene finished washing her hands, and smirked at him as she opened the door.
“Showtime.”
